Two new exhibitions showcase classic Oriental art

While opportunities for art-lovers tend to be thin on the ground over summer, the French capital offers more than enough to satisfy even the most demanding of aesthetes this month. Billboards throughout Paris announce the invasion of China’s “eternal soldiers,” the famous terracotta army buried with the first Chinese emperor, Qin Shi Huang Di, more than 2,200 years ago. The dramatic statues were discovered by farmers digging a well in central Shaanxi province in 1974; since then some 6,000 figures have been uncovered, though only a tiny proportion – including models of entertainers, animals and carriages – are on show at the Pinacothèque until 14 September.

The Musée National des Arts Asiatiques was founded by industrialist Emile Guimet in 1889 to house his collection of Chinese and Japanese art. Until 4 August, the venue hosts a major display of work by Hokusai. The Japanese artist is perhaps best known for his print series Thirty-Six Views Of Mount Fuji, which includes the famous Great Wave Off Kanagawa, shown here alongside more than 100 other works.
