Gulf Air extends its fleet
Gulf Air has placed a firm order for 35 Airbus aircraft. The airline currently operates 10 A320s, six A330-200s and nine A340-300s, and the new order will more than double the number of Airbus aircraft in the fleet.
The contract was signed by Gulf Air chief executive officer Björn Näf and Airbus president and CEO Tom Enders at the Berlin Air show. “Gulf Air is taking huge strides forward in its strategy to re-fleet and expand its network, and this contract is a significant milestone in this direction,” says Näf.
“Gulf Air is undergoing a rapid expansion and Airbus is delighted to partner the airline in its ambitions,” said Enders.
“It’s a mark of the quality of our aircraft that Gulf Air has chosen two from our family of products. These aircraft not only offer unbeatable economics, but in today’s world where green issues are a concern, Gulf Air have chosen the world’s most fuel-efficient aircraft.”
The A320 will serve Gulf Air’s regional destinations, while the A330 will operate on the airline’s European routes and enhance its Far Eastern services.
Double signing
Gulf Air has just signed two important agreements with major institutions in the Kingdom. Gulf Air has entered a strategic alliance with the Bahrain Exhibition and Convention Authority (BECA) aimed at boosting the Kingdom’s position as a leading destination for corporate meetings, conferences and exhibitions.
Gulf Air’s chief executive officer Björn Näf signed the agreement with BECA’s acting CEO Debbie Stanford-Kristiansen.
The airline has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Bahrain – the country’s only national university – to collaborate on a number of activities that would provide opportunities for professional development, training and transfer of knowledge between the two institutions. The signing, by Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Janahi, the university president, and Björn Näf, took place in a ceremony held at the Sakhir campus.
