CAIRO

Heba Selim

She’s Egypt’s first female hotel chief concierge and what she doesn’t know about shops and services in Cairo isn’t worth knowing. Text by Sam Bayoumi

Heba Linens
Everybody knows how good Egyptian cotton is, and lots of our guests want to buy sheets and towels to take home.

This is the place to find the best quality. It does special orders too, such as adding your monogram.

Casper & Gambini’s
This is one of my own favourites, a relaxed café-restaurant. It opened last year and it’s a great lunch place with soups, salads and sandwiches. It does the best coffee in town and the best chocolate cake ever.

Abu Al-Sid
If guests want to eat outside the hotel, this is where I send them, and they always come back saying they loved it. Great service, a cosy ambience and good Egyptian food.

Al-Agati
If you want silver, forget Khan Al-Khalili – you get much better quality at Al-Agati. It’s particularly good for non-jewellery items like vases and home accessories. Again, you can have them personalise your purchases by engraving your name on them.

Azza Fahmy
She’s been around forever but her jewellery is just the best. It’s very Egyptian but also suits international tastes.
