MANILA
TOUR SOME UNUSUAL TOMBS
The Chinese Cemetery, the second oldest in Manila, is famed for its ostentatious tombs. Mausoleums here are often sumptuous, with air-conditioning, crystal chandeliers and even flush toilets; one is three storeys tall. www.oldmanilawalks.com
SEE IMELDA MARCOS’ SHOES
When Ferdinand Marcos fell from power in the Philippines in 1986, many people were particularly amazed by the size of wife Imelda’s shoe collection; when the couple fled into exile she was reputed to own 3,000 pairs. The Marikina City Footwear Museum contains shoes created by world-famous names, such as Dior and Ferragamo, donated by local celebrities as well as Marcos herself – all in her (UK) size eight-and-a-half. www.marikina.gov.ph |
