EAT MIDDLE EASTERN WITH A DIFFERENCE
For a taste of the rich history of the Middle East, head to Al-Mayass restaurant in Achrafieh. Lebanon hosts one of the largest Armenian communities outside of Armenia and this restaurant specialises in its national cuisine, with a Levantine twist. Bursting with unusual flavour combinations – grilled kofta with black cherries, for example – a meal at Al-Mayass is hearty and heavy, but well worth the caloric intake. The place itself is old and cramped, and is hugely popular with locals and visitors alike, so booking in advance is recommended. KAYAK OUT TO THE PIGEON ROCKS
The Pigeon Rocks, off the coast of Beirut, are the city’s most striking landmark. Borrow or rent a small boat or kayak from the Sporting Club, on Achtarout Street, just off the Corniche, and shoot through one of the arches for an adrenalin-filled moment. Kaelen Wilson-Goldie www.sportingclub-lb.com
GO CLUBBING IN A “BUNKER”
Sited underground in Beirut’s old quarantine district, B018 club has dominated the city’s nightlife for the last decade. Architect Bernard Khoury and manager Naji Gebran’s dramatic venue may not look like much from the outside – just wait till that roof opens up to the stars. Kaelen Wilson-Goldie www.b018.com |
